We&#8217;ve talked to plant breeders from around the world, <a href="https://groundedbythefarm.com/plant-breeding-science-food/">Dr. Lee Hickey who works in a plant breeding lab in Queensland, Australia</a> and <a href="https://groundedbythefarm.com/growing-plant-based-protein/">Dr. Priyanka Gupta who is working on the grasspea in Morocco</a>. Thing is, while plant science as a whole is wildly complicated (there&#8217;s a reason Drs. Hickey and Gupta have Ph.D.s), there are some reasonably easy concepts we can all get our head around.</p>
<p>I think a great way to start is to understand how plants move water, nutrients, and energy through themselves. I mean, we&#8217;ve all seen how a plant can go from wilted and shriveled to up and perky again after you water it, right? So of course, it&#8217;s got to be moving stuff around in there somehow. Plants have vascular sustems just like we do, which is pretty cool when you think about it. Instead of moving blood through arteries and veins, plants move the water and nutrients using their xylem (prounounced zeye-lem) and their phloem (flow-&#8217;em &#8211; sounds like a football cheer).</p>
<h2>Understanding Plant Science &amp; Vascular Systems</h2>
<p>Just like for us, the primary components of the vascular system of plants are really the way to transport critical pieces around the plant&#8217;s body.</p>

<p>The vascular system on sprouts would be really small and the vascular system of a sequoia would be huge. These systems are designed to transport nutrients, water, and sugars around the plant. The website <a href="http://www.biology4kids.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Biology4Kids.com</a> has a great page (yes, I like the simple language it has compared to my cotton bible, and I&#8217;m going to reference it a lot) called Plants: Xylem and Phloem where the vascular system is described in an easy to understand way:</p>
<blockquote><p>It all starts with a top and a bottom. Logically, it makes sense. Trees and other vascular plants have a top and a bottom. The top has a trunk, branches, leaves, or needles. The bottom is a system of roots. Each needs the other to survive. The roots hold the plant steady and grab moisture and nutrients from the soil. The top is in the light, conducting photosynthesis and helping the plant reproduce. You have to connect the two parts. That’s where xylem and phloem come in.</p></blockquote>
<h2>Xylem Provides the Supply of Water &amp; Minerals</h2>
<p>The xylem of a plant is the system of tubes and transport cells that circulates water and dissolved minerals. As a plant, you have roots to help you absorb water. If your leaves need water and they are 100 feet above the ground, it is time to put the xylem into action! Xylem is made of vessels that  move water around. The roots of a plant are what help the plant reach water and nutrients. They help absorb the critical components for nourishment. As that stuff gets into the plant, the xylem takes over. The <a href="http://www.biology4kids.com/files/plants_xylemphloem.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Biology4kids page</a> says:</p>
<blockquote><p>The xylem of a plant is the system of tubes and transport cells that circulates water and dissolved minerals. As a plant, you have roots to help you absorb water. If your leaves need water and they are 100 feet above the ground, it is time to put the xylem into action! Xylem is made of vessels that are connected end to end for the maximum speed to move water around. They also have a secondary function of support. When someone cuts an old tree down, they reveal a set of rings. Those rings are the remains of old xylem tissue, one ring for every year the tree was alive.</p></blockquote>
<p>I wish I could find some old photos I took when I was in the field with one of the company’s soybean breeders because the photos showed a disease called fusarium wilt that shut down the vascular system, basically starving the plant. You can see some pics on the <a href="https://cals.cornell.edu/field-crops/soybeans/diseases-soybeans/fusarium-wilt">Cornell College of Agriculture and Life Sciences website</a>. It is dramatic what happens to the plant with the vascular system stops working.</p>
<h2>Phloem Moves Sugars/Energy</h2>
<p>Photosynthesis is a process we all learned about in grade school. It’s the way plants convert sunshine into energy. Again, <a href="http://www.biology4kids.com/files/plants_xylemphloem.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Biology4Kids basic explanation of phloem</a> makes this understandable.</p>
<blockquote><p>Most plants have green leaves, where the photosynthesis happens. When those sugars are made, they need to be given to every cell in the plant for energy. Enter phloem. The phloem cells are laid out end-to-end throughout the entire plant, transporting the sugars and other molecules created by the plant. Phloem is always alive. Xylem tissue dies after one year and then develops anew (rings in the tree trunk). What is the best way to think about phloem? Think about sap coming out of a tree. That dripping sap usually comes from the phloem.</p></blockquote>
<p>So like we have veins and arteries, plants have xylem and phloem. It&#8217;s not a perfect metaphor, but it can help you get your head around the idea of how plants move the water, energy, and nutrients from their roots to their leave and their leaves to the roots. Plant science is one of those things I geek out about, so I really hope you&#8217;ve enjoyed this plant-themed mini-anatomy lesson.</p>

<p>Recently, we talked about <a href="https://groundedbythefarm.com/plant-breeding-science-food/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">plant breeding</a> and I mentioned we would be talking with another plant breeder &#8212; <a href="https://twitter.com/VidhiPriyanka" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Dr. Priyanka Gupta</a> &#8212; this summer. Although Priyanka is from India, plant breeding work has led her to work in several countries. She&#8217;s currently focused on improving <a href="https://hort.purdue.edu/newcrop/CropFactSheets/grasspea.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">a plant called grasspea</a> in Morocco. <a href="https://sites.google.com/site/knowyourvegetables/know-your-peas/know-your-grass-pea" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Ever heard of a grasspea?</a> I hadn&#8217;t either so no need to feel bad. It&#8217;s part of the pulse family (like the <a href="https://groundedbythefarm.com/growing-lentils/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">lentils</a> and  <a href="https://groundedbythefarm.com/growing-purple-hull-peas/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">purple hull peas</a> we discussed with farmers in season 1). And it has the highest percentage of protein content!</p>

<h2>Discovering a Love of Agriculture</h2>
<p>While growing up in India, Priyanka knew plenty of people who took the very traditional thing that women in India are encouraged to do &#8211; become a wife and help to raise a family. Maybe teach for a bit. But there had always been a strong pull to do something else with her life and ultimately, she chose to focus on benefitting the planet. She started in environmental sciences and eventually became a true evolved lover of agriculture.</p>
<p>For those that think that careers like being a &#8220;Global Grasspea Researcher&#8221; are something someone is born with &#8211; nothing could be further from the truth. Priyanka was very undecided when the time came to choose a career path, and only with the help of friends and classmates, and some focused determination, was she able to eventually find out what her next step would be in life and her career.</p>

<h2>What does grasspea look like?</h2>
<p>As you&#8217;ve discovered, the grasspea &#8211; looks like grass, and tastes like a pea. Didn&#8217;t take a creative brainstorming session to come up with that name, but  &#8211; isn&#8217;t that amazing?</p>
<p>Priyanka was nice enough to send us photos of the crop at various points of the season. Here&#8217;s the video.</p>

<p>Priyanka explains that grasspea is a renaissance crop or a crop which is able to offer people a rebirth. That&#8217;s because it is so hardy that it can grow with the least amount of water. And it is so nutritionally beneficial &#8212; 30 percent protein!</p>
<p>But she admits to a component that can be controversial. One of the pieces that Priyanka is focused on, is a naturally occurring substance in grasspea called ODAP. The natural chemical is advantageous for medicinal reasons with cardiovascular health but if you get too much of it in your diet, a reality that can happen when famine is striking and people are desperate for food. With the limited number of crops available in those situation, people have large percentages of their diets in grasspea and ODAP can cause some muscular or nervous issues. So Priyanka and other researchers are trying to reduce the presence of ODAP in some varieties suited for those regions while providing ODAP for pharma uses in other regions.</p>
<h2>Understanding ICARDA&#8217;s Role</h2>
<p>After focusing her studies, and an extended fellowship program, she found herself part of <a href="https://www.icarda.org/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">ICARDA</a> &#8211; a global organization that applies science to dry areas of the world to build resiliency. And that is where Priyanka began her focus on the grass pea.</p>
<p>ICARDA originally had many of its resources located in Syria, but recent political unrest fostered a change of venue to Morocco &#8211; a Northern African country, bordering the North Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea. <h2>Plant Breeding Shifts Prove Beneficial</h2>

Learning how each of them is different, but also learning which characteristics each share has been incredibly valuable not just in the evolution of growing both of these crops, but in Priyanka&#8217;s growth as a researcher and person. You see, while the crops ARE different and DO have different qualities that each thrives in &#8211; BOTH share things that &#8211; when implemented in tandem &#8211; allow each of the species to thrive &#8211; and by learning about both, this also allows Priyanka to thrive and evolve as a researcher as well.</p>
<p>One of the most fundamental differences between grasspeas and wheat are their root structures. Inside this episode of Grounded By The Farm, Priyanka details how each grows and is able to tap the local water-based resources to enable each to survive. This is what makes the study not only interesting but incredibly valuable when it comes to research and development in areas where there is so little water but always the need for more food, resources and support.</p>

<p>I met Lee in the friendly confines of the vast wheat fields just outside Obregón where <a href="https://twitter.com/DrHikov" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Norman Borlaug started his Noble Peace Prize winning work</a> to enable developing countries to produce more food for themselves. We were at the <a href="https://www.cimmyt.org/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">CIMMYT (an international plant breeding effort for corn and wheat)</a> with plant breeders from around the world to trade the latest in research tips and to celebrate what would have been <a href="https://www.cimmyt.org/multimedia/happy-birthday-norman-borlaug/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Bourlaug&#8217;s 100th birthday</a>.</p>
<p>Lee&#8217;s story starts strangely &#8211; in the city &#8211; in Australia called, Brisbane &#8211; a city on the East Coast of Australia just a short ways away from the Great Barrier Reef. Every state in Australia has an interest in agriculture, but in Queensland, where Lee now resides and does his research, it&#8217;s a tropical to sub-tropical environment. In contrast, the plants that grow in Queensland, are much different than what grows in the Southern states of Australia that have a much cooler climate. While wheat and barley are grown there &#8211; mostly because of their drought-hearty properties, a lot of the work that Lee is focusing on is to foster on the speed at which the plants grow and evolve.</p>
<h2>What is plant breeding?</h2>
<p>Lee was able to put the concept of what he does very simply. He points out that farmers many thousands of years ago started selecting the seeds from plants that perform best, they would balance the harvest with what they would grow the next season.</p>
<p>What has followed, in just the last 100 years or so, is the targeted crossing of species, that provides traits that we &#8220;want&#8221; versus what is given to humans naturally by growing plants. While these traits can include, flavor, longevity, being seedless, growing faster and use quality it&#8217;s really only the tip of a much larger iceberg that has generated the industry of plant research.</p>
<p>Still not understanding where we&#8217;re going and what we&#8217;re talking about here? Well, it&#8217;s this simple: a lot of the crops that we now know worldwide, all come originally from the same plant. Broccoli? Cauliflower? Brussel Sprouts? Kale? All of them were because someone liked a specific part of the plant and wanted more of it! Over centuries, maybe millenia, the parts of the part that one person wanted kept getting chosen for the best and that meant the other parts were getting smaller in comparison! Pretty cool, huh? <h2>Building In-Plant Resistance</h2>
<p>Another reason that people research plants, is to help them stave off disease. As we all know from our experience of the last year, rogue elements can wreak havoc on anything and plants are no exception. Utilizing the targeted selection and crossing of species allows researchers to find new ways to prevent plants from succumbing to disease to live longer and thrive, so that the communities they grow in can also. While that is a huge challenge, it is one that began ages ago and can help us to change the tide if a variety of ways, including directing plants to evolve to survive in a world that is impacted by global climate change.</p>
<p>Having worked with cotton so long (she has a site called <a href="https://HundredPercentCotton.com" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Hundred Percent Cotton</a>), Janice jokes that Australia challenges plants and people with all the things! In general, Lee agrees and says there would BE NO COTTON in Australia without advanced breeding and technology. But thanks to the targeted alteration of plants via the efforts of researchers, it has not only become possible but is one of the many crops harvested there en masse.</p>
<h2>Finding The Right Path in Agriculture</h2>
<p>As mentioned, Lee grew up in the city, not on a farm, but always had an affinity for his &#8220;veggie patch&#8221; in the backyard. It became a true passion that led him to learn how to care for his veggies to provide the best and most yield that he would share with his parents and neighbors (<a href="https://www.vegetables.co.nz/vegetables-a-z/chokos/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">especially chokos which were abundant</a>!) and now &#8211; here he is &#8211; a plant researcher building the future not just for neighbors, but whole communities around the world.</p>
<p>Technology has infused itself into modern-day plant research as well. Drones, ornate illumination implementation and more all provide Lee with the ability to not only collect mounds of research that would have taken a much longer time previously, but it allows him to have fun and then pass on the experience to others quickly, effectively that propels the next round of work. A particular focus for this is a process called &#8220;Speed Breeding.&#8221; While this too might sound like a bit of the joke mentioned in the front end of this discussion, it is also certainly a real process, with real results and a legacy that continues to provide to communities worldwide.</p>
<h2>Cool Technology in Plant Breeding</h2>
<p>The lighting that&#8217;s used inside of crop and plant research also helps to provide the researchers with faster growth, in that they&#8217;re able to foster along faster growing periods with the infusion of lighting that tricks the plants growth system and process. This has taken processes that would originally have taken 12 years down to an amazing only 7 or 8 years to develop.</p>

It is just happening saving you all the time and effort that might have been wasted if not for the very focused ability to target the traits you desire.</p>
